it’s all about healthy living

Nelson Marlborough is well placed to take a lead in healthy lifestyles - to the benefit of everyone who lives here. It is a wonderful region for those who get out and enjoy it on foot, bike and kayak. The region’s coastline and rolling hills are a rich source of seafood, fruit and other healthy foods.

Cutting edge

Children bring their fruit to be cut up by the Cool School Mediators

Children bring their fruit to be cut up by the Cool School Mediators (in yellow vests) every lunchtime at Tahunanui School

If you cut it - they’ll eat it! This is old news to anyone who has tried to get children to eat fruit, but it’s the secret to success at Tahunanui School. Principal, Paul Drummond says staff were alarmed to see fruit being binned at lunchtime, some with only one or two bites taken. At a meeting organised by the Health Promoting School teams the children said they’d eat more fruit if it was cut up - and it’s working.

All about the NPA

Making lifestyle changes needs a “whole of society” response, and actions at a number of levels. At the end of 2005 the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board made a significant five-year investment in an inter-sectoral Nutrition and Physical Activity (NPA) programme, aiming to lead and facilitate the community’s response.

Our goals:

Long term

Short term

Our vision

To improve health in Nelson-Marlborough, by providing opportunities and motivating people to eat better, be more active and make healthier choices.

Breaking News….. Reprioritisation of Funding

As a result of the Government’s reprioritisation of HEHA funding, Nelson Marlborough District Health Board will no longer be in a position to continue offering the NPA Small Grants and HEHA Nutrition Fund.
