It's all about healthy living
Nelson Marlborough is well placed to take a lead in healthy lifestyles - to the benefit of everyone who lives here. It is a wonderful region for those who get out and enjoy it on foot, bike and kayak. The region’s coastline and rolling hills are a rich source of seafood, fruit and other healthy foods.

NMDHB lifestyle programme - healthy foods for healthy eating

The Nelson Marlborough nutrition and physical activity programme for healthy living in. Healthy eating plan and sporting activities. Nutrition facts on healthy foods, combating obesity in New Zealand along with improved lifestyle activities to fight diabetes, cancer, and other related public health issues.

All about the NPA
Making lifestyle changes needs a “whole of society” response, and actions at a number of levels. At the end of 2005 the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board made a significant five-year investment in an inter-sectoral Nutrition and Physical Activity (NPA) programme, aiming to lead and facilitate the community’s response.

Our goals:
Long term

  • Improved health and wellbeing through healthy eating and increased physical activity.
  • Reduction in obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Short term

  • Provide an integrating framework for all existing and future work in nutrition and physical activity in Nelson Marlborough
  • Development of a comprehensive five year plan, with involvement of key stakeholders.

Busy Beavers
The Little Beavers from Beavertown Early Learning Centre get their 30 minutes of physical activity each day thanks to climbing steps, hopscotch and an enclosed trampoline bought with an NPA grant.
We're spreading the word about the positive changes being made as our region provides the opportunities that make healthier choices easier. Look for our Healthy Living column in your Top of the South community paper and listen to Matt Lawrey's breakfast session on Fresh FM. We want to hear about what you or your group is up to - please send your photos and a short explanation to our editor, jacq@nelsonmedia.co.nz

Our vision
To improve health in Nelson-Marlborough, by providing opportunities and motivating people to eat better, be more active and make healthier choices.

Funding to help with healthier choices
The NPA has several funding opportunities to help community groups, schools and early childhood centres with nutrition and physical activity projects. The Ministry of Health has established a fund for schools and early childhood centres to apply for initiatives to improve the nutrition of their students.
The NPA Strategic Plan has identified priorities for groups where we can help to make the most positive changes in lifestyle. Community projects focused on improving nutrition or increasing physical activity are eligible for grants and we are also offering  contracts for initiatives that will really make a difference to Maori communities and to vulnerable people and families.
